Bio

DJ Bamboo is a Seattle native that has been in the spinning scene since ‘93. Like many DJ’s, scratching was a great appeal and it spawned motivation to practice and evolve into a scratch and mix DJ.  Starting out all hip-hop, he evolved into soul, and regressed into true school soul party grooves/remixes. The musical terrain has shifted dramatically, but good soul and hip-hop still exist – and it’s DJ’s like Bamboo that spread the word via the turntables.

Bamboo was one of the first DJ’s of Seattle to master the multi-track mixtape in the early 90’s, and has been known to be a perfectionist when it comes to quality and cleanliness of every mix. Influences at the time were DJ Rectangle, DJ Dirty Harry, and DJ Break. Local influences have been and still are DJ DV One, DJ E-Rok, DJ Vitamin D, DJ Tre, and DJ Topspin. Hustling these mixtapes landed him as a resident DJ at Aristocrats and other party clubs. In 2000, he moved to Philly and experienced a great change in musical environment. Being around a plethora of underground support, he met a group of grassroots DJ's known as the Ill Vibe Collective, who gave him hope that good music can still survive amidst the millennium downturn of hip-hop and R&B. Neo-soul was conceived in Philly, and he was fortunate to be there during it's surge. Archaeology was good during those years before the digital DJ closed down all the record stores. You dig enough and you'll find gold - and the Drunken Soul mixtape was born – simply a soul masterpiece featuring artists such as Adriana Evans, Amel Larrieux, Yahzarah, Aquanote, Little Brother, Moka Only, Dred Scott, Eric Roberson, Cooly’s Hot Box, Jazzyfatnastees, and many others.

Since his return to Seattle in 2006, Bamboo has been sponsored by Jeepney Clothing to create mixtapes for promotion. His interests now lie in timeless Soul/R&B dance parties and urban lounges. He has since become resident at Viceroy, spinning soulful lounge music, and moved on as a current resident at The Baltic Room on 2nd Friday nights (Joints & Jams), rockin’ the venue with 70s, 80s, and 90s soul/funk/hip-hop for a grown crowd. Bamboo has teamed with long-time friend DJ Spinja to form Groove Techs, where true old school awareness is the main interest. Their latest endeavor is the Skratch Lounge, a monthly event for Seattle DJ’s to network and flex their skills on the tables. The one-year anniversary recently passed in April 2011, and showcased DMC Champ Mista-B and Snaykeyez from the Bay Area. Groove Techs are also nearing a one-year anniversary of the quarterly Back To The DJ event, where a handful of O.G. DJ's come to rock genre specific sets.
